How do I support my child with maths?

.. is perhaps asked most weeks at the First Class Learning tutoring centres. It’s not an easy question to answer, particularly as there seems to be a whole raft of changes with the new national curriculum.

This particular post is all about word problems although it is fair to say that a good grounding in mental arithmetic will also work wonders. While I’m not persuaded that an endless series of maths drills can be entirely beneficial .. they can be useful to build some key skills.

A student who isn’t worrying about 6 x 7 is much more likely to engage with a written maths word problem. Like most of education it’s probably just a matter of balance. The main thing is to keep practicing – whether drills or word problems – to gain confidence and become good at maths. That was a (not so) subtle link to my new Udemy course.
