Standard form calculations – GCSE maths grade 5

June 5, 2021 by Simon Deacon Leave a Comment

These videos look at standard form calculation type questions, and are aimed at around grade 5 GCSE maths. The questions should be reasonably straightforward, although they can take a little time to practice.

The first video is all about the theory, and you’ll need to be able to work with indices, the second video aims to give you some experience with standard form calculations as word problems.

These types of questions appear in all the main GCSE exam boards – Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Educas – and are fairly common for non calculator papers.

Top Tips!

  • It’s all about moving the decimal point*
  • Make sure you check the index to see how many jumps
  • Always use a zero to keep the places correct
  • Remember two negatives make a positive

* This topic can sometimes be taught with the decimal point staying in the same place – and the numbers moving.
